Carter Administration Officials Blast Democratic Spending for Worsening Inflation; “Desperate” Gimmicks

July 5, 2022

Democrats who battled inflation during the Carter Administration are blasting Biden Democrats for reckless spending that made inflation worse, and pushing “desperate” gimmicks like a gas tax suspension that won’t help consumers instead of taking real action to fight rising costs.

  • Carter “Wage-Price Council” Leader Barry Bosworth: “It is apparent to Mr. Bosworth that the $1.9 trillion pandemic aid package that Democrats passed in 2021 has fueled inflation. ‘It clearly turned out to be excessive,’ Mr. Bosworth said. ‘The amount of transfer funds that we poured into the economy over a short period of time clearly added to inflation.'”
  • Carter Treasury Secretary Michael Blumenthal: “Mr. Blumenthal said Mr. Biden should heed the lessons of Mr. Carter’s failed attempts to curb inflation by avoiding measures that are counterproductive. He urged Mr. Biden to support a substantial interest rate increase and to abandon his sweeping legislative package in favor of deficit reduction… ‘Inflation fighting comes first.. He has to show the recognition to the public that inflation has lasting deleterious effects on the economy”
  • Carter Treasury Assistant Secretary for International Affairs Fred Bergsten: “…the United States should avoid the kind of domestic oil price controls that were in place during the 1970s and that the Carter administration eventually abandoned in 1979. Describing them as an ‘abysmal failure,’ Mr. Bergsten said they distorted energy markets. ‘One lesson from the Carter administration is don’t do that,’ Mr. Bergsten, 81, said. ‘Energy price controls discourage production and held down the supply side over time.’ Proposals such as the gas tax holiday would most likely just fuel more inflation, he predicted, by giving drivers more money to spend, and would make the Biden administration look desperate by resorting to gimmicks.”

Every vulnerable Senate Democrat voted to make inflation worse by supporting the disastrous “American Rescue Plan” these Carter-era Democrats say “clearly added to inflation.” And now, every vulnerable Senate Democrat wants to make inflation even worse by pushing Biden’s gargantuan Build Back Better spending plan instead of focusing on curbing out-of-control spending, which these Carter-era Democrats call “counterproductive.”

What’s worse, Senate Democrats are pushing gimmicks like a gas tax holiday these Carter-era Democrats say “would most likely just fuel more inflation,” and would “make the Biden administration look desperate by resorting to gimmicks.”

Democratic Senators like Mark Kelly has gone so far as to lie about his vote for the American Rescue Plan, claiming it “did not cause inflation.” Economists and even other Democrats recognize this false claim as the transparent deflection that it is, pointing squarely to the ARP as responsible for several points of inflation.

“Democrats are on the hook for the out-of-control inflation hurting families, and they want to make it even worse by pushing through even more reckless government spending. Enough is enough. The only way to stop these Democrats continuing to throw gasoline on the inflation blaze is to take away their Senate majority by electing Republicans who will rein in spending.” -SLF Communications Director Jack Pandol
