Democrats cower from voting on the Green New Deal

March 26, 2019

Today, the U.S. Senate held a vote on the Green New Deal, introduced by Sen. Markey and Rep. Ocasio-Cortez, which estimates conclude will cost up to $93 trillion to implement.

The bill boasts 91 House cosponsors and 12 Senate cosponsors, including 6 current candidates for President: Sens. Sanders, Harris, Warren, Booker, Klobuchar, and Gillibrand.

Yet Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer implored Democratic Senators to vote present to avoid putting pressure on vulnerable Democratic Senators to go on record in support of the bill.

Vulnerable Democratic Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Tina Smith, Gary Peters, and Mark Warner all declined to take a position on the bill, voting present like Chuck Schumer told them to.

“Democratic Senators who are too afraid to tell their constituents where they stand on this unsustainable $93 trillion reorganization of American society are cowards who don’t deserve to set foot in the chamber where they serve.” -SLF Communications Director Jack Pandol
