Joe Manchin’s Equal Pay Hypocrisy

April 10, 2018

Joe Manchin feigned outrage on Twitter earlier today over women in West Virginia earning 72 cents for every dollar a man makes.  But if Manchin truly cared about equal pay, then why did female staffers in his office only make 76 cents for every dollar a male staffer made in 2017?

“The fact that working women in Joe Manchin’s office are earning 76 cents to every dollar a man makes just defies common sense. West Virginia voters should call Joe Manchin’s office NOW to demand Joe Manchin prioritize paycheck fairness.”

Manchin’s male staffers occupied higher paying jobs like chief of staff, legislative director, communications director, and administrative director.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) has added his name to the list of Senate Democrats who paid their female staffers considerably less than their male colleagues in 2017, according to an analysis conducted by the NTK Network.

April 10 is Equal Pay Day in America, but Manchin’s female staffers will have to wait a few more days before they can recognize it.

Equal Pay Day was started by the National Committee on Pay Equity (NCPE) two decades ago, and “symbolizes the date women must work full time up until to make the same amount that men made working full time the year prior.”

A Vox analysis found that women in the United States earned about 79 percent of what men did in 2017.

In Manchin’s Senate office, he paid female staffers 76 cents for every dollar paid to men during the 2017 fiscal year, according to an NTK Network analysis.

While Manchin employed more women than men in his Senate office, those male staffers occupied higher paying jobs like chief of staff, legislative director, communications director, and administrative director.

In the past, Manchin has called equal pay “common sense,” but his actions tell a different story.

For example, two female regional coordinators in Manchin’s office made $33,000 each in 2017, while their male counterpart made $38,541 during that same period.

It doesn’t stop there, either. A female legislative assistant in Manchin’s office made $73,833 in 2017, while her male colleague with the same title made $76,749 in 2017.

The only position in Manchin’s office that was occupied by both male and female staffers where the individuals were paid the same was staff assistant.

When Manchin had the chance to pay female staffers the same as their male counterparts, he failed to do so.

‏NOTE: Only full-time staffers who worked the full fiscal year 2017 were included in NTK’s analysis.
