Sara Gideon’s Husband Looks to Profit by Suing Veterans Homes She Declined to Support

June 10, 2020

A new report shows Sara Gideon’s personal injury attorney husband is looking to sue Maine veterans’ homes during the pandemic – after Sara Gideon let multiple bills to increase support for these same veterans’ homes die in the state legislature.

The past two years, Speaker Gideon allowed two bills – one to increase state Medicaid reimbursements to Maine Veteran’s Homes facilities, and another to increase the staff-to-patient ratio at these facilities while increasing reimbursement rates – to falter without being enacted into law. Gideon was not a cosponsor of either bill.

Yet last month, Berman & Simmons, where Sara’s husband Ben Gideon is a partner, publicly solicited Mainers to contact the firm for a consultation to sue these same veterans’ homes. Gideon’s financial disclosure shows her husband has a stake of up to half a million dollars in the firm, meaning she would directly financially benefit from the firm’s potential lawsuits.

“Shame on Sara Gideon and her family for preying on vulnerable veterans just to make a few bucks. This is the kind of behavior that demonstrates Gideon is only in public office for herself, not to serve Maine.” -SLF Communications Director Jack Pandol
