The super PAC aligned with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell raised $37.6 million in September, according to fundraising totals provided to POLITICO, a gargantuan sum that Republicans will need in the coming weeks as they seek to protect their Senate majority.

The fundraising haul was by far Senate Leadership Fund’s largest monthly total for the midterm cycle and a tenfold increase over the $3.2 million that the group raised in August. It brought total fundraising for the midterm elections to $99.6 million at the close of September, and the super PAC said it has since crossed the $100 million fundraising mark.

“Everything clicked into place for us this month — both financially and politically,” said Stephen Law, president and CEO of Senate Leadership Fund.

“Donors got massively fired up after the Kavanaugh fight, including some who had gone dormant for years and others who just wanted to double down,” he said, referring to the Senate battle over confirming Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.

Senate Majority PAC, the Democratic counterpart to Senate Leadership Fund, has not released fundraising totals for the month of September. At the end of August, the group had raised a total of $95.7 million for the midterm cycle.

Republicans are determined to protect the Senate from Democrats, whose base has been motivated by President Donald Trump to both vote and donate massive sums of money to candidates. But in recent weeks, Senate Republicans and their allies have grown more confident about their prospects of maintaining or even increasing their majority.

They expect to spend heavily on television ads in a swath of battleground states to do so. The constellation of outside groups linked to Senate Leadership Fund has $64.6 million cash on hand overall, spokesperson Chris Pack said.

One Nation, the political nonprofit affiliated with Senate Leadership Fund that does not disclose its fundraising totals, raised $13.85 million in September, and American Crossroads, another affiliated group, raised $150,000, Pack said, bringing the total fundraising for the three groups to more than $51 million.
