WASHINGTON, DC – Senate Leadership Fund President and CEO Steven Law released the following statement in response to an NBC News report, directly corroborated by Sen. Bill Nelson himself, indicating that he leaked classified intelligence information about alleged Russian “penetration” of the Florida election system.
“Senator Nelson has repeatedly claimed that Russians have ‘penetrated’ Florida’s election system while simultaneously refusing to provide hard evidence of these sensational claims in response to requests from Florida election authorities. Now NBC News has revealed, and Sen. Nelson appears to admit, that his public statements are essentially leaks of classified intelligence information. This warrants an investigation into Nelson’s claims and whether he has improperly leaked classified information.
“It also raises questions regarding the three sources in the story who, by trying to corroborate Nelson’s assertions, appear to have leaked classified information themselves.”
On Friday afternoon, Senator Bill Nelson issued a tweet from his official Twitter account linking to a story from NBC News. The story states, “[T]hree people familiar with the intelligence tell NBC News that there is a classified basis for Nelson’s assertion, which he made at a public event after being given information from the leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee.”
