Swamp Creature Sara Gideon on Campaign Ethics: “Do as I Say, Not as I Do”

January 15, 2020

Democratic Senate candidate Sara Gideon rolled out a campaign finance platform, despite being the poster child for the kind of illegal or ‘bad’ campaign finance practices she says she wants to end.

1) While Gideon claims she’s refusing corporate PAC money, her state-level PAC was heavily funded by corporate cash. Gideon even broke federal law to route this money from her PAC into her own personal pocketbook, earning a fine from the Maine Ethics Commission.

2) Gideon claims she wants to overturn the Citizens United case but fails to mention her former staff are currently leading a dark money organization flooding Maine with false advertisements about Senator Susan Collins.

3) Finally, Gideon claims she wants to limit the influence of lobbyists – yet Gideon has accepted over $19,000 from lobbyists in Q2 and Q3 for her current Senate campaign.

“It’s ironic that Sara Gideon’s campaign finance plan would put swamp creatures like Sara Gideon out of business. The real question is whether the Maine press will give her a pass on her transparent hypocrisy and bad faith.” -SLF Communications Director Jack Pandol
